The HawkEye HD has an automatic overwrite feature (can be toggled on/off), which records normal files but cleverly automatically overwrites the oldest data first with new information once the memory card is full. The length before overwrite is determined by the size of the memory card with a 16gb card allowing up to 6 hours video at 1080P (full HD), up to 12 hours at 720P (HD) and 24 hours at 480P (TV).

The unit has a 120 degree wide angle lens for capturing as much of the road ahead as possible without distorting the image. Number plates are recognisable up to 20m whereas most 640 x 480 systems will only allow for up to 5m.
